April / May 2008 Line Up

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

APRIL 2008:

28th: SNAX (LIVE)

Originally from the U.S, Snax is firmly ensconced in the Berlin underground, having been a member of electro wizards Captain Comatose. With a couple of albums already in the can, tonight he brings his sleazy Prince-isms to the club so we can all get the funk. Unbelievably dirty basslines and tight trousered vocal harmonies are the order of the day. Think Mr. Oizo with a sex addiction and you’re half way there….

MAY 2008:

5th : POST WAR YEARS (LIVE)

Post War Years are Simon, Henry, Tom and Fred. They all bunk up in a dis-used Russian Social club (so the tale goes) and create slightly epic, artsy synth pop. A bit like a less overtly happy MGMT with touches of collage rock and a some Beck-isms thrown in, tonight they’ll be coming down to entertain us! Debut single ‘The Black Morning’ is released on May 12th….

12th : DUCHESS SAYS (LIVE)

Montreal children A-Claude, Ismael, Phil and Simon Says make up Duchess says. This enigmatic bunch of Canadians are sure to bamboozle - as it says on their myspace: “Duchess Says is serving us a repertory of “moog rock” songs strong in images and enormoustly intense live performances!…Duchess Says has the mandate to decontextualise the rock and to promote simultaneously their Church on the way”. So now you know….

BANG GANG (DJ SET)

Guests of ours last Autumn, Bang Gang served up an almighty dance party so good we’ve invited them back again! With a double mix CD ‘LSD: Light, Sound, Dance’ out now on Modular records, don’t miss the chance to make your feet very happy!

19th : WE ARE WOLVES (LIVE)

More fun from Montreal this week with Lupine friends Alexander, Vincent and Antonin, who make up We Are Wolves. Once again, these French Canadians say it better than we ever could: ‘A gang of three, four including rock. We are Wolves imposes a music that’s both free and honest, like the celestial lightning on the mystic mountain. It’s a post-punk landscape filled with analogue trees. It’s like rock after the post-modern explosion.’

SKULLJUICE (DJ SET)

Regular guests Alex and Ben bring their juicy skulls down to Durrr again to drop another of their famously funtastic sets! Having recently remixed LOTP’s ‘The Bears Are Coming’ and put out the latest in their series of excellent podcasts these busy boys about town are always a treat!

26th : PANTHER (LIVE)

Portland, Oregon’s Panther are Charles Byron Salas-Humara and Joe Faustin Kelly. They released their album ‘14kt God’ on Killrockstars in Febuary and have been bending discerning ears for a while now. Punky but intricate, synthy yet rocking - don’t miss the chance to see these underground kings! www.myspace.com/panthertouch

7th - Electricity In Our Homes (Live)

Electricity In Our Homes are Paul, Charles, Bonnie and Thomas, and make the kind of noise you might hear if Captain Beefheart hi-jacked The Fall. They’ve released one EP so far (the ultra sold-out ‘Shareholder EP) to rapturous reception, and been on the cover of The PiX. Tonight they come and make a noise in front of us!

14th - Cibelle (Live) & Secret Guest (Live)

Cibelle hails from Brazil, is currently based in Dalston, and has an utterly compelling voice. Tonight she’ll be performing live for us - expect a very special performance! Cibelle will also be joined tonight by another of our Secret Guests for a collaboration - as always they’re not to be missed, and you’ll have to keep your ear to the ground to find out who it is!

21st - DURRR’s 1st Birthday! - Sons And Daughters (LIVE)

Glasgow’s Sons and Daughters have made a damn fine album in the shape of soon to be released ‘This Gift’, and we’ve been playing the ‘Gilt Complex’ and ‘Darling’ singles out a lot! Tonight we’re very pleased to welcome them to our stage, where they’ll be treating us to highlights from the new album and doubtless some older favourites too….

Poni Hoax (LIVE)

Poni Hoax are French squelch-pop outfit Laurent Bardainne, Nicolas Ker, Nicolas Villebrun, Arnaud Roulin and Vincent Taeger. With a few singles already out on Tigersushi records, you can hear their music on their myspace, where you can also download ‘Involutive Star’ …

As it’s also our first birthday tonight, we’ll have a set from a special guest DJ…find out who by turning up!

28th - One More Grain (Live)

The fantastic One More Grain return to our stage for the launch of their second album ‘Isle Of Grain’, out today on White Heat Records. Strung out on free jazz and krautrock influences, with Daniel P Quinn’s distinctive semi stream of consciousness vocals they’re unlike anyone else around at the moment. Club fave and ode to nervous breakdowns ‘Having A Ball’ is released as a single soon (also on WHR) - A genuinely beguiling band, don’t miss!

NEW PODCAST:

We also have a new podcast up from resident Our Man Fred, recorded at the beginning of December, it’s up here
